Wood (and other materials) Information Page
After 13 years of turning and working with it, I still love wood and feel I am a true explorer - when I cut wood -
I am seeing something never seen before.
This is in my T&Cs, but I am going to put this here so you are sure to read it...
- I don't do big discounts for multiple purchases or cheap bulk orders.
- You have to buy a lot from me regularly to get any discount at all.
- I will cut to size - BUT - this takes time.
Do not expect a turn around of
less than a week to 10 days.
After cutting, wood needs to rest
and move, and then acclimatise. That takes place before I send it out.
That way my customers are happy and I am not fleeced by unscrupulous people who claim the wood is defective and
expect more for free.
(Yes - sadly - I learned that lesson the hard way.) In a society where we import ready made goods to purchase
instead of doing it ourselves, we forget
that making things or even just processing wood takes a lot more time than we think it does.
That said, I can now go on to what I sell...
- Turned Pyrography and Carving Blanks:
These are turned to a fine standard but they are left unfinished, allowing you, the carver / pyrographer
to do art to your heart's content. Sometimes I leave a spigot on them for purposes of holding in a carving
vice. If you use a normal vice or workmate and need a set of holding jaws made to suit the foot, please
enquire (use the contact button at the bottom of the page). Usually made from well-seasoned lime or sycamore,
but the occasional item of cherry or other suitable wood finds its way here too.
- Miniature and 1/12th Scale Turning Blanks:
As I cut and sell wood for other things, I always have a lot of little pieces left over. I turn those I can,
but I realise there are just too many for one person and one life. Therefore I offer these here so others may also
experience the pleasure of miniature turning. Sold in packs and low-priced individual pieces - save on postage -
fill a box!
- Bobbin Blanks:
Again, it is a situation where I realised I would never turn all the bobbin blanks I own in one lifetime
(I bought a skip full and keep cutting more - how sad is that?). Note on quality: If I personally would
not use a bobbin blank, and I am extremely fussy - I want my bobbins to last 150 years - I would
not sell it to anyone else either - you can be assured that these are all top quality and have straight grain
where they need it - to make necks that won't break. Be sure to check which end is which before you start
turning or you may cry...
- Pen Blanks:
Someone once said: "When it comes to wood - Jean does not do average..."
Perhaps this is all I need to say about the quality of my pen blanks. What I would like to tell you is that
I specialise in pre-cut pen blanks (clearly marked as pairs), making life much easier for the person who hand saws their blanks in half.
For those who prefer to cut their own or use kits that need one section longer than the other - full length blanks
are available. I do try to mark the woods with their names, but don't always remember. If you want to know -
add a note to your paypal slip at time of purchase asking me to note the woods. Like the bobbins - if I would
not use the wood myself - I will not sell it either. Sometimes CA glue is called for on blanks which need it.
This will be noted in the individual listings.
- Carving Blanks for 3D and Relief Work:
Usually well-seasoned lime, but when I have cherry or other suitable woods, these will be here too.
Various sizes - see the individual items for details.
- DIY Walking Stick Handles:
This includes both pre-formed walking stick handles for DIY and handle carving blanks for fancy work. Patterns also
available here.
- Knife Scales:
Knifescales and other
knife building equipment and supplies are available here as well as on my other website:
www.knifescales.co.uk.
Both websites look at the same stock inventory database - the look and feel and arrangement of the goods are just
different from one to the other. Meant for the tool maker and artist - not mad thugs who want to make their own protection.
If weapons are on your mind - feel free to go shop elsewhere, or change your attitude and save a life (possibly your own).
