Bowls, Platters and Plates
Apparently, most beginner turners are impatient when it comes to learning the basics of spindle turning and eager to 'get on to bowls'. I didn't have that problem. I wanted to turn boxes. With screw threaded lids. I came into bowl making because I was asked to, and while I now really enjoy making a beautiful bowl and continually strive towards that elusive ideal of the perfect form, it is not the be-all and end-all of the process to me.
My sister Anne wanted a purpleheart bowl.
This blank was split almost through in 3 places. This became obvious when I started turning the blank to round, so I took it off the lathe and soaked the splits in repeated doses of superglue, topping up every few hours to fill the gaps and make the blank safe to turn again. The results of my labour were worth the effort - she loves it, and so do all the guests that come to her house who have never seen purpleheart before. When he woke up, Leo was fairly laid back about a bowl leaning up against him. The bowl measures 10" across.
It was a sad day when Miss Morrish retired
She was the head of our sons' high school. A lovely lady with a strong sense of discipline and purpose in life. She did a good job. This was a bowl I turned for her when she left. Far better than a bottle of whisky and chocolates, in my view. She thought so too.
